David Michaelis: “The Wyeths, Including Thoughts about Eleanor Roosevelt: A Biographer’s Notebook”

August 13, 2023 @ 5:30 pm

David Michaelis, close friend and New York neighbor of Islesboro summer resident Francie Train, is a successful biographer of notable American figures whose interests varied widely.  He wrote of the Wyeth family whose members lived and painted on our nearby coast of Maine, of Charles Schulz, creator of PEANUTS cartoons, and of Eleanor Roosevelt.  The “stunning” volume on Mrs Roosevelt was reviewed as the “first major volume of biogaphy in half a century” and was nominated for the Los Angeles Book prize for Biography.  His volume The Wyeths has been widely sought, and his N.C. Wyeth won an Ambassador Book Award. Beyond biography, Michaelis has written throughout his life: non-fiction, short stories, extensively about friendships with well-known figures of the 70’s & 80’s.  During those years he planned a movie (un-produced), edited The Paris Review, wrote for Manhattan, Inc. and volunteered for the New York Police Department.  His wisdom, humor, and wide interest in American lives is broadly admired. He will be accompanied by his wife, Nancy Steiner, documentary film producer.
