Dr. David Reidmiller: “Climate Risks & Response Options in the Gulf of Maine”
July 23, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Through a range of physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic impacts, climate change poses an existential threat to Maine’s coastal communities as we know them. But it doesn’t have to. Dr. Dave Reidmiller, Director of the Climate Center at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute will provide an overview of observed and projected climate impacts in this region and what the state, municipalities, blue economy businesses, and coastal residents are doing to address climate-related risks—and capitalize upon emergent opportunities afforded by pro-actively responding to climate change.
Dr. Dave Reidmiller is the Director of the Climate Center at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI). In that role, he leads a team of interdisciplinary experts developing and delivering climate services to coastal and marine stakeholders throughout the Gulf of Maine. Prior to joining GMRI, Dave served in a number of senior climate science policy positions with the federal government. Among those roles was serving as the Chief Climate Scientist for the State Department where he led U.S. engagement in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and served as the lead U.S. science & technology negotiator for the Paris Agreement). As part of the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy, he led the development of the Fourth National Climate Assessment, which serves as the nation’s most authoritative source on how climate change affects the livelihoods and well-beings of Americans in every corner of the country. Dr. Reidmiller holds a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Washington and a BA in chemistry from Colgate University. He grew up in Rochester, NY and fulfilled a lifelong ambition of living in coastal Maine by moving to South Portland with his wife, Katie, and dog, Atticus, in 2020.
